Authorized but Rare: The Dealer-Commissioned ASC Convertible

The car Highlighted here is a car that sold on Bring a trailer in November of 2025. The car was listed by a family member of the original owner who purchased the car from a Cadillac dealer in Beverly hills California and sent it to the ASC factory in Long Beach California as stated in the BAT listing

A Unique Piece of Eldorado History While General Motors officially contracted ASC (American Sunroof Corporation) to build the limited run of 1984 and 1985 Eldorado Convertibles, the demand for these open-air classics often exceeded supply. To meet this demand, select dealerships would commission ASC to perform "post-production" conversions on standard Eldorado Coupes.

These vehicles are unique in the registry. They feature the identical high-quality engineering, structural reinforcement, and craftsmanship of the factory fleet—performed by the same ASC experts—but they were born as Coupes. This distinction makes them a fascinating chapter in the Eldorado’s heritage.

Factory Commissioned, VS. Dealer Commissioned notes

Whats missing ,The Biarritz fender & door trim

Whats missing ,The Biarritz fender & door trim

"Missing Trim: Note the absence of the specific Biarritz stainless steel molding on the door and fender caps, which is standard on factory convertibles."

this car has a standard Eldorado interior

Whats missing ,The Biarritz fender & door trim

"Standard Interior: This highlighted car features the standard Eldorado seating pattern rather than the specific 'tufted' leather style reserved for the factory Biarritz Convertible."

Power top button on right side of radio

The ASC decal we normally see on the drivers door

"Retrofit Controls: The power top switch is mounted to the right of the radio, rather than the integrated left side factory location." NOTE the plaque stating to put the windows down prior to lowering the top , we have to wonder was this not automatic like the factory commissioned ASC convertibles or did it fail and they added the note

The ASC decal we normally see on the drivers door

The ASC decal we normally see on the drivers door

The standard ASC decal typically found on the driver’s door. but with a slightly different look and a late build date of October of 1985

A additional ASC decal in the drivers door jamb

"A secondary ASC manufacturing decal located in the driver’s door jamb—a trait often seen on commissioned conversions." Note the late build date of 10/25/85

The standard GM label

Factory vs. dealer commissioned

Decoding the VIN The easiest way to identify if  an Eldorado is a Factory commissioned conversion is in the 6th and 7th digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

  • Factory Convertible: Features the code "67" (e.g., 1G6EL67...) denoting a factory-ordered convertible body style.
  • Commissioned Conversion: Features the code "57" (e.g., 1G6EL57...) denoting it began life as a Eldorado Coupe before its professional transformation by ASC.
  • NOTE the august build date

Tire label on drivers door

Factory vs. dealer commissioned

A Factory commissioned Eldorado convertible would have the touring suspension option with the larger P225/70R15 tires , just another tell tale sign this car was not one of the 2200 Factory commissioned Eldorado convertibles

The RPO decal from the trunk

Note the vin number is for a coupe not a convertible  (57 instead of 67).  Also note  it does not include the RPO code of YP8  that definitively says it the factory option of a convertible
